What is a Maker Space?

What is a Maker Space?

Maker Spaces combine technology, tools, community, and education for the purposes of enabling students to design, prototype and manufacture their own creations.

Why create a Maker Space at Durham?

A Maker Space will help foster students’ natural curiosity about “how stuff works”.  It is this curiosity that may inspire them to pursue educational and career opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.  STEM jobs lead the nation in growth potential and earnings.

How will it work?

The Durham Maker Space will be available for students to use during designated, supervised times before and after school.  Students will need parent permission to join the Maker Space “Club” in order to use the space.  Students and parents must agree to abide by all safety and procedural rules while using the space.
